The Alfreton branch of Barclays bank is set to close this summer.

The bank, located on the High Street, will close on August 26.

Barclays said the decision to close the bank follows a reduction in counter transactions taking place at the bank.

According to Barclays, fewer than 10 per cent of all transactions now take place inside a bank.

However, 168 regular customers use the Alfreton branch exclusively and do not interact with Barclays in any other way.

After the Alfreton branch of Barclays bank closes, the nearest ones will be in Mansfield and Derby.

The nearest free-to-use cash machine will be further down the High Street.

A spokesperson for Barclays said: “The decision to close a branch is never an easy one. However, customers are increasingly using alternatives to branches to do their banking. As a result, we are seeing a sustained fall in branch visits across the UK.

“This is reflected at Alfreton branch where there has been a 20 per cent reduction in counter transactions in the two years to March 2020. In addition, 85 per cent of our customers at the branch are also using different ways to bank.

“We will work with our customers and provide alternative options to ensure they can continue to manage their money and receive financial expertise when required.”
