Almost 50 knives have been collected during a special operation by police in the Alfreton area.
Operation Sceptre, last week’s national knife crime week of intensification, saw police up and down the county taking part in a variety of activities.
As well as representatives of Derbyshire Police being out and about ‘sweeping’ local areas for any discarded knives, they also had amnesty bins available for people to hand in any unwanted knives at various drop off-points at police stations around the county, including at Somercotes and Riddings, and Alfreton.
A spokesman for Alfreton Police SNT posted pics of the some of their ‘sweeping’ action on the force’s Facebook page on Friday, November 17, and stated: “Today, as part of the national Operation Sceptre week of intensification on knife crime, the team have been out and about in Alfreton conducting knife sweeps at Grange Street Park and Alfreton park.
“Whilst we know it is the minority of people who think it is acceptable to carry a knife, it can have devastating consequences when they do.
“This work means that we can check for any discarded knives.”
The spokesman posted further pictures of their operation on Sunday (November 19) and stated: “This week as part of the national Operation Sceptre week of intensification on knife crime the local Somercotes and Riddings Safer Neighbourhood Team have been out in various locations conducting knife sweeps. We visited Crays Hill Park, Somerlea Park and Riddings Park.
“Doing this means that we can check for any discarded knives or weapons and safely dispose of them, keeping them from getting into the wrong hands.”
The spokesman then posted, on Monday (November 20) a picture of the almost 50 knives which had been collected in by the force, stating: “Knives collected during last week Op Sceptre.”
