Alfreton’s new youth service provider has unveiled plans for a free sports club for 11 to 16 year olds.

The sports club will take place at Alfreton Leisure Centre, on Church Street, on Wednesdays between 4pm and 6pm.

The first session will take place on Wednesday, October 11.

The club is the latest offering from Alfreton Youngsters Umbrella Provision – known to many as AYUP.

The CIC was set up in July to provide a safe and secure environment for young people to meet and take part in a range of different activities.

Since July, AYUP has been offering free weekly workshops for 11 to 17 year olds.

The sessions, run by Old Farm Bus, take place at Alfreton Community Hall, on Mansfield Road, on Fridays between 5pm and 7pm.

AYUP relies on donations from the local community and has largely been made possible by the fundraising efforts of James Simpson, who has raised thousands of pounds to support youth services in the town since last summer.

On the new sports club, AYUP said: “Thank you all! As a direct result of the community’s help and generosity in supporting AYUP, we are pleased to announce a weekly free sports club for 11 to 16 years olds at Alfreton Leisure Centre Sports Hall every Wednesday from October 11, 4pm til 6pm. No need to book, just turn up.

“Also, a huge thank you to The Melissa Grace Hatton’s Children’s Trust for their grant supporting AYUP.”

For 24 hours from 6pm tonight (Friday, October 6), members of Death Of The High Street will walk loop of Alfreton Park for 24 hours to raise money for AYUP.

The band’s walk will be supported by a Charity Fun Day at Alfreton Cricket Club from 12pm tomorrow (Saturday, October 7).
