Alfreton Leisure Centre, which is situated in Church Street, was one of many centres across the country which hosted a Swimathon event in April.
The national event saw hundreds of swimmers take to pools across the country in aid of Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie charities.
Here a spokesman for Alfreton Leisure Centre introduces us to just some of those who took part in the event:

“Here we have Freddie and Richard who both took part in this years swimathon.
“Both of them completed the 5k, Freddie in an impressive one hour and 39 minutes with dad Richard playing catch up at one hour 40 mins.
“An impressive achievement by the both of them and we look forward to seeing the father and son rivalry again next year.”

“Here we have Aydrian who also completed a whopping 5k, in an impressive one hour and 37 minutes.
“She is seen regularly in our pool and it’s clear the hard work and dedication is paying off. Fantastic work Aydrian.”

“Olivia swam 1.5k (60 lengths) in 48 minutes, which was seven minutes under her practice runs, so she was super happy with that.
“Olivia has raised £425 so far and she has challenged herself to go for the 2.5k next year. We are sure you will smash that one as well Olivia.”

“Henry is one of our stage six swimmers and he achieved 16 lengths in an impressive 14 minutes.
“Fantastic result Henry, we are all super proud of you.”

“Bethany did 1.5k (60 lengths) in 59 minutes. Massive congratulations Bethany.”
Bethany said of her swimming journey with the leisure centre: “I managed to complete the Swimathon in 59 minutes which is more than I ever thought I’d be able to do, so a massive thank you to ALC and Liam for all the support over the last year.
“I started swimming in January 2023 and I was a complete non-swimmer and panicked if my head went in the water due to a prior bad experience.
“Liam has been so helpful and has given me the support I need to find my confidence in water.
“It’s now April 2024 and I am able to swim: breaststroke, back stroke and front crawl plus I am in the process of learning the butterfly because I am enjoying it so much.”
Bethany continued: “Our Friday night group are all so friendly and supportive and without the people in the class I definitely would not be where I am today.
“For anyone wanting to learn to swim I would highly recommend ALC and their swimming teachers as I have achieved things I never thought possible.
“I had attempted to learn to swim around five times before and I got nowhere and gave up but this time after just over a year I have completed the 1.5km Swimathon and couldn’t be more proud of what I have achieved.
“So thank you to all at the leisure centre and especially Liam for all the support I have received over the past year.”
