A community brass band in Derbyshire has gained new members as well as coming out tops at a competition.
Shirland Welfare Brass Band hosted an Open Day last weekend (June 8) to encourage new members to joining their group. Plus the band took part in the recent Wetherby ‘The Drovers’ Brass Band Marching Contest.
Maria Whitton Moakes said of the open day: “We had four children attend and one of them is definitely coming to training band this week, so that’s a positive start.”
Maria continued: “We had a brilliant day at Wetherby recently with our Main Band. We won our section and came third overall out of 16 bands.”
Meanwhile, the Shirland Welfare Brass Band are gearing up to ‘raise the roof’ in helping St Leonard’s Church in their village to raise funds for a roof project by taking part in a concert on Saturday, July 6.
Maria said of the musical evening: “Enjoy an evening of delightful music by Shirland’s finest brass band. Hear a captivating mix of traditional favourites, modern classics, and stunning performances by local soloists.
“This special concert, held at St Leonard’s Church, Shirland, supports both the church’s ‘Raise the Roof’ appeal and the Shirland Miners Welfare Band.”
She continued: “Uplifting music for all ages. Delicious light refreshments with wine, tea, coffee, and cakes included. Exciting raffle with fantastic prizes.
“Join us for a memorable evening that benefits the community.”
