Three people have died and two others were seriously injured following a crash on the A38 near Alfreton.

The collision happened on the southbound carriageway, close to the exit for the B600, at around 2.15am on Saturday (April 23) morning.

Only one car was involved in the crash, a silver Ford Focus, which police say left the road and collided with a tree.

An appeal for information issued by Derbyshire Constabulary said: “Two women and a man died at the scene. Their families are aware and being supported by specially trained officers. Our thoughts are with them at this most distressing of times.

“A man and a woman were taken to hospital with serious injuries. They both remain in hospital, the man in a critical condition and the woman in a stable condition.

“Officers would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the crash or noticed the care, which had been travelling southbound on the M1 before the collision.

“We would particularly appeal for anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage which could help with our enquiries to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information about the crash should contact Derbyshire Constabulary on 101 and quote reference 22*0229425.
