About the Spirit of Alfreton:

The Spirit of Alfreton is an innovative and highly successful community news portal for the town of Alfreton in Derbyshire and its surrounding areas, it was established in April 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and has already reached an average of 25,000 views a month.  It has become a trusted source of local news and information on its website and social media used by the whole community including schools, businesses and local interest groups. The Spirit has developed a lively following where local people communicate and contribute.

The site is sponsored by The Christopher Nieper Foundation, the philanthropic arm of David Nieper Ltd.

The role:

The site is designed to be ‘For the community, by the community’. 

The Editor will source, curate and upload news and other community content daily. The Editor will also be expected to respond to and engage with the community through its social media channels.

The Editor will also manage input from a cohort of undergraduate journalism students, who regularly work with our team on work experience placements.

The role is initially part-time with flexible working hours which could increase to full-time with expansion of the site(s).

About you:

We are looking for a news journalist who has experience of editing online news channels and managing social media pages.

You will have an NCTJ qualification, a passion for local news and broader understanding of current affairs.

Working within easy reach of Alfreton, the role is home-based with regular office check-ins, both online and in-person with the wider team – so the right person should be flexible and self-motivated.
