Arvinder Singh has applied to Amber Valley Borough Council to turn the former Pricedless shop, based in 88 High Street in Alfreton, into five flats.
The Scope of works includes a slight alteration to the front elevation, forming the new dummy sash window serving the second-floor apartment and the repositioning of the existing oval stained window to the higher position.
If approved, the ground floor shop unit would be retained, while a flat will be created on the ground floor to the rear of the building. The first floor would become two flats and a new second floor would be formed and turned into two bedsits.
The application says the scheme would create three full-time jobs and two part-time jobs.
Mr Singh said in his application:
“The site is within the town centre of Alfreton, and the proposed minor alterations will enhance the fabric of the closed former retail unit. Improving the street scene by reducing the number of already closed units, creating local jobs and accommodation in the region.
“In recent years Alfreton has suffered high unemployment levels, The main industry of Alfreton was historically coal mining but after the mines closed in the 1960s it changed to light industry, warehousing, retailing, and the service sector, so job creation opportunities should be encouraged.
“The appearance of the building will be enhanced visually by the full external decoration and re signage of the existing. The first-floor upper section brickwork facade to the front elevation is to remain where possible.”
