Supermarkets may be rationing fruit and vegetables but there is no shortage of supply at Alfreton Indoor Market.
It is business as normal at Denise’s Fruit and Veg stall, which is fully stocked with fruit and vegetables and there is no limit on how much you can buy.
Denise Balandis, who runs the stall, buys her stock from the wholesalers, which she says is becoming increasingly expensive.
She told the Spirit of Alfreton that the price of some items – like red peppers, for example – have more than doubled in price recently due to cold weather in the countries where they are grown.
Denise said: “There’s a lot coming from abroad, tomatoes and cucumbers that aren’t grown in this country yet.
“Normally there’s lots coming from Spain because it’s normally warm there but they’ve got really bad weather so they’re having to put their heating and lighting on to bring them on, and that’s why it’s so expensive.”
Denise has had to put her prices up to reflect the rising cost of fruit and vegetables from the wholesalers but still has a full range available, unlike many supermarkets.
Alfreton Indoor Market, on Institute Lane, is open between 8am and 4pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
