The team behind a village carnival in Derbyshire are celebrating 25 years of the community extravaganza
The 2024 Newton Carnival is set to take place on Saturday, July 13.
Plus there is a full programme of other family events lined up by the carnival team to take place throughout the year.
Here, Carnival co-organiser Dexter Bullock, gives a rundown of the history of Newton Carnival: “The carnival was formed in January 1999 by a group of volunteers who had previously been attached to Newton Primary school PTFA.
“The school had asked me and the PTFA to form a committee to try and resurrect the village gala last seen in Newton in the late 1950s.
“The team set to work and in the space of a few months organised a small parade and activities in the school grounds.
“The weather was horrendous, but the village turned out in support.”

Dexter continued: “Following the event, the school said the event was too big for them and asked for it to become a village event.
“The challenge was set, date agreed and off we went.
“We formed Newton Carnival team with the help of Stella Scott from Bolsover CVS and then started a massive task of raising enough funds to stage the villages first carnival.
“Over a year the team arranged fundraising events before the big day.
“Over the past 25 years we have seen many volunteers give their time to help and organise event.
“We will always be extremely grateful for their help and support; without them we would not be here today.”
On to the events which the team have organised, Dexter said: “Over the years we have organised many events, this year we have planned the following: Tea with the Easter bunny; Plant and Craft Fayre; Annual Carnival; Festival of Fireworks; Christmas Fayre and Lights; and Santa’s visit to the Parish, Newton, Hilcote, Westhouses, Blackwell.”
Dexter then said of the carnival team’s vision: “This year is our 25th anniversary which is a massive achievement for such a small team of dedicated team.
“We would like to see the organisation continue to deliver a small amount of quality events throughout the year and to continue being recognised as one of the leaders in community organisations.”
